Taste of the Wild produce a range of different dry foods for dogs and puppies, but no tailored foods for large breed puppies or adults. Here, we take a look at their puppy mixes to judge suitability for large breed puppies.
The ingredients in both puppy mixes (High Prairie with Roasted Bison and Roasted Venison / Pacific Stream with Salmon) are mainly very high quality. The meat and fish sources are both good; the first listed ingredients are all meat or fish. TOTW is a grain free mix, which is good. The only slightly dubious ingredients are tomato pumace (some see this as a poor byproduct, though it is high in fibre) and pea protein, which comes quite high in the ingredients list of both mixes. This might be a concern, as pea protein is less valuable than proper meat protein.
These puppy mixes do not contain additives such as glucosamine and chrondroitin which are useful for joint support and can be found in most tailored mixes.
The calcium levels are only very slightly higher than ideal (High Prairie at 1.4% and Pacific Stream at 1.3%), and should be perfectly okay for large breed pups.
Overall, this is a high quality food with generally excellent ingredients, though you might feel more comfortable opting for a dry mix tailored specifically for large breeds such as Orijen Puppy Large.
