Joint supplements can be particularly beneficial to large breed dogs - either to support the treatment of conditions such as hip dysplasia, or simply to aid the development and healthy maintenance of joints. The best supplements work on the following ingredients:

This is an essential building block of joint and surrounding tissue, such as cartilage, tendons, etc. Although glucosamine occurs naturally in the body, supplementing it can help delay the breakdown of cartilage as well as rebuild it.

Chrondroitin also helps delay the breakdown of joint tissue by reducing the activity of certain enzymes which damage collagen in joints. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which helps alleviate joint pain.

MSM is useful as a joint supplement thanks to its anti-inflammatory effects. It can greatly help to alleviate the pain caused by joint problems, and can also be beneficial for other issues such as skin conditions.

If you want the most effective supplement, then you'll need one with all three of the above ingredients. Not all - or indeed many - of the dog joint supplements on the market contain all three, and those that do often have insufficient concentrations or incorrect ratios.

One supplement that does get everything right, and the one we use, is Riaflex Canine Joint Plus. This not only contains the best ingredients at good concentrations and correct ratios, but it is also a very cost-effective supplement. Have a look at this comparison chart:

Riaflex CJP comes in powder form. It can be sprinkled straight onto wet food. If using to supplement dry food, it is recommended that you moisten the kibbles with a little water so the powder sticks to it.

It is developed by an animal scientist who offers excellent customer support.
